Warm fuzzy open source moment

2008

January

Every so often in open source there is a perfect storm of a well timed report, correct triage, a developer with a fix and a quick review. Bug 414123 is one example. From being reported at 07:07:42 PST to fixed at 20:07:03 PST is quite outstanding. I was running through my favorite Bugzilla search. Near the bottom of the list I came across the gem I am talking about today.

Thanks to Samy Dagan for the report, Mats Palmgren for the fix and Robert O'Callahan for review. All three made for a nice evening surprise in my mailbox.

Getting Adobe Reader 7 working in Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

If you downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 from Adobe. You will find that when you launch Adobe Reader no window will appear. You may notice the Adobe Reader start up script acroread in your process list. If you run Adobe Reader from the terminal you will see "expr: Syntax error" repeated endlessly. This can be fixed by replacing

echo $mfile| sed 's/libgtk-x11-\([0-9]*\).0.so.0.\([0-9]\)00.\([0-9]*\)\|\(.*\)/\1\2\3/g'

with

echo $mfile| sed 's/libgtk-x11-\([0-9]*\).0.so.0.\([0-9]*\)00.\([0-9]*\)\|\(.*\)/\1\2\3/g'

. As found on the Ubuntu Forums.

Getting restarted on Ubuntu Linux

Change

My main computer, running Windows XP, died while I was away this weekend. So far the causalities are a Antec SmartPower 350 power supply and a NF4K8AB-RS. I am grateful that both of these companies stand behind their product with a three year warranty.

This means I have dusted off my linux box that I normally VNC into. It has taken about a day and a half to get Ubuntu Feisty Fawn tuned to my liking.

Tweaks

I plugged in my Samsung SyncMaster 225BW. Shortly there after the screen would blank and display "Not optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1680x1050". I had to press the change input button to get the display for about 30 seconds then it would blank again. Of course I head off to Google and find a page with the exact settings xorg.conf for your SyncMaster 225BW on Ubuntu! I am pleased to say that the information is exactly was what I needed.
